Occupational Therapy
A child’s day is filled with “occupations”: the everyday activities that matter to them, like playing, learning and making friends.
Paediatric occupational therapists help children and their families succeed in these activities throughout the day. At TDCC Abu Dhabi, our Occupational Therapy Programme supports children of all ages by focusing on the activities that matter most in their lives, including self-care, play and school.
Our Abu Dhabi occupational therapists provide assessment, treatment planning and therapy for children from birth to their teenage years. Using a range of practical, everyday activities, they help children build skills in:
- Self-care and safety, building independence in feeding, dressing, bathing and personal hygiene.
- Motor coordination, for handwriting, doing up zips and buttons, using a knife and fork, playing on playground equipment, and joining in with games and sports.
- Oral motor skills, for eating, managing food in the mouth, bottle feeding, and accepting a variety of food textures and types.
- Visual perception, for activities such as puzzles, building and construction play, and early reading and maths skills.
- Sensory processing and integration: how the nervous system takes in information from the senses and turns it into the right movement and behaviour. It underpins everyday activities, motor skills from simple to complex, visual perception, executive functioning and self-regulation.
- Emotional and self-regulation, helping children manage routines and transitions calmly, such as bedtime, getting ready for school, carpet time, PE, playtime, mealtimes and family outings, without distress or meltdowns.
- Social participation and community inclusion, so children can take part fully at home, at school and in the wider community.
