Caregiver Training for Children of Determination soon to open for Season 3!

Overview

The caregiver training for children of determination will be held over four sessions on at the TDCC. The training will be face to face  conducted by our specialist educators and will focus on a range of topics related to caring for children with special needs. The sessions will introduce and explore a range of special needs focusing on developing effective communication strategies, understanding behavior and sensory needs, social and play skills, and fostering independence and home routines. This training aims to equip caregivers with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide the best possible care for children of determination.

Objectives of the Training

Basic Care Needs of the Child:

1. Learn about the characteristics associated with a range of additional needs.

2. Understand the unique physical, emotional, and developmental needs of children of determination.

Communication Strategies:

3. Develop effective communication skills to interact with children of determination.

4. Understand the importance of alternative communication methods such as sign language, picture exchange communication systems (PECS), or  Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.

5. Learn to use appropriate language and tone to support communication with the child.

Understanding Behavior and Sensory Needs:

6. Learn how to recognize and manage challenging behaviors and sensory needs of children of determination.

7. Develop positive behavior management strategies to support the child’s needs.

8. Understand the impact of environmental factors on the child’s behavior and sensory needs.

Social and Play Skills:

9. Understand the importance of social interaction and play in the child’s development.

10. Develop strategies to support the child’s social skills, including initiating and maintaining social interactions and communication with peers.

11. Learn to adapt play activities to meet the child’s unique needs and interests.

Fostering Independence and Home Routines:

12. Learn to support the child’s independence and participation in daily routines.

13. Develop strategies to promote the child’s participation in household tasks such as meal preparation, cleaning, and laundry.

14. Understand how to modify home routines to meet the child’s unique needs and abilities.

In addition to these objectives, caregivers should also learn about the importance of advocacy, individualized care plans, and ongoing professional development to ensure they are equipped to provide the best possible care for children of determination.
