Free Webinar: The Learning Brain: Helping Children Build Confidence, Independence, and Academic Readiness

What are cognitive skills, and why do they matter for learning?

How are learning challenges linked to a child’s confidence?

How can parents help their child become a more independent learner?

Many parents notice that their child is bright and capable, yet struggles to start homework alone, loses focus in class, or gives up quickly when a task feels hard. These moments are rarely about effort or motivation alone. Often, they reflect how a child’s underlying thinking skills are developing.

Attention, memory, reasoning and problem-solving are the cognitive foundations that every child relies on to learn. When these skills are still developing, everyday tasks such as following instructions, organising work or joining a class discussion can feel harder than they look. Over time, that difficulty can quietly affect how a child sees themselves as a learner.

The Learning Brain explores this connection in practical, parent-friendly terms. Debbie Gilmore will explain how these foundations support learning, why some children find school more demanding than others, and how stronger foundations can help children feel more confident, capable and independent.

The session is designed for parents and teachers who want to understand what may sit behind a child’s learning struggles, and what the adults around them can do to help. No specialist background is needed.

The webinar is part of TDCC’s ongoing commitment, as a UAE Parent Friendly Label holder, to give families access to meaningful, evidence-informed guidance from respected professionals.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

Explore how cognitive skills influence a child’s confidence, independence and readiness to learn. Understand how skills such as attention, memory and reasoning shape the way a child approaches new tasks and challenges.

Understand the connection between learning challenges, self-esteem and classroom participation. Recognise why a child who finds learning difficult may become hesitant to speak up, try new things or work on their own.

Learn how parents and teachers can support children in becoming more confident and independent learners. Take away practical ideas for encouraging persistence, problem-solving and self-belief at home and in the classroom.
