Beyond Words: A Neuro-Affirming Approach to Supporting Autistic Communicators
At TDCC, we believe that every child deserves to be heard—whether through speech, signs, gestures, or assistive communication. In this powerful and insightful webinar, “Beyond Words: A Neuro-Affirming Approach to Supporting Autistic Communicators,” Liz Hajj Nicolas, experienced Speech and Language Therapist, will guide participants in rethinking what it truly means to communicate.
Drawing from neurodiversity-affirming practices and years of clinical experience, Liz will explore how communication goes far beyond spoken words—and how families, educators, and professionals can create supportive environments that honor and empower each child’s unique voice.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Understand and recognize diverse forms of communication beyond speech, including AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), gestures, and behavior.
2. Apply neuro-affirming strategies to promote communication in home, school, and community settings.
3. Identify and implement meaningful accommodations rooted in sensory-informed practices.
4. Foster environments of acceptance that celebrate each child’s communication style and needs.
5. View behaviors through a communication lens—listening beyond the words.
