Occupational Therapy Assessments
An occupational therapy assessment at TDCC in Abu Dhabi helps us understand your child’s strengths and the areas where they need support. With that understanding, we can help your child reach their full potential and become more independent and capable in everyday tasks at home and at school. Depending on your child’s needs, the assessment may combine a parent or guardian interview about your child’s history, a review of relevant records, observation at school and in the clinic, and standardised, norm-referenced testing.
Our assessments cover:
- Sensory processing (how your child takes in and makes sense of what they see, hear, touch and feel, and how they respond)
- Self-regulation (how your child calms down, adapts to their surroundings and manages their behaviour in social and emotional situations)
- Executive functioning skills, including attention, memory, organisation and flexible thinking
- Neurodevelopmental status and reflex maturity
- Gross motor strength, stamina and coordination · Fine motor skills, including dexterity, hand strength, grip, range of movement and bilateral coordination (how well both hands work together)
- Visual-motor and visual-perceptual skills
- Handwriting
- Dyspraxia (motor planning skills)
- Self-care skills such as dressing, grooming and eating
Occupational therapy assessments are usually play-based. They combine standardised tools, such as questionnaires and tests, with clinical observation of your child completing a variety of activities, from everyday tasks to movement-based and tabletop activities. Depending on the concerns raised at your first appointment, assessments can take place at our Abu Dhabi clinic or at your child’s school. Afterwards, we share clear recommendations. These may include strategies and activities to try at home, therapy sessions at our clinic, or support delivered at school. If you’re concerned about your child’s motor, sensory, self-care or learning skills, contact our Abu Dhabi team to book an assessment.
